Chelsea’s endless manager spiral is costing them players as well as managers

Chelsea’s manager search continues, and every moment wasted is costing them.

Firstly, it’s costing them the best managerial options. Thomas Tuchel, Unai Emery, even Carlo Ancelotti have all been taken off the table by other big clubs.

But it’s also going to cost them when it comes to players. Manchester City, now reaping the rewards of putting a solid structure in place over many years, are on the verge of signing both Napoli’s Jorginho and Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez – both of whom have been reported to be Chelsea targets in the past.

It’s not just a question of not having a manager in place to green light the deals – it’s a question of “why would a top player choose to come to a club that has no manager?”

Sure, you could sign a player from a smaller club right now, and they will come even if we tell them that Avram Grant is coming back to be in charge.

But if you want the very best you need to show them that they will be furthering their career by coming to the Bridge.

Just look at Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard. They both said that their future depends on what the club does this summer.

So far, that’s not amounting to much.
