Chelsea player criticises Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup goalscoring

Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas is working as a BBC pundit at the World Cup, and he can’t be accused of shying away from some big opinions, especially when it came to talking about Cristiano Ronaldo’s tournament so far.

And Cesc wasn’t holding back, giving this assesment of Ronaldo’s performance.

“Yes, he is playing well, but if you really look at what he has done, he has scored one penalty, one free kick, one goal from a corner and one with a shot that David De Gea should have saved,” he said on the BBC, in quotes carried by the Daily Star.

It sounds like sour grapes, especially from a Spaniard, whose team was on the receiving end of three of those goals. But he does have a point it has to be said. While they were all important goals, Cesc is correct that Ronaldo isn’t all over the pitch running games as he did in the past.

On the other hand, he’s making the difference on the scoresheet, and that’s where it really matters. Tiki-taka is great, but goals are better, and as it stands, Ronaldo is carrying his team through another international tournament, just as he did two years ago.
