Willy Caballero given huge World Cup boost to play all games for Argentina

Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero has been given a huge boost ahead of the World Cup in the summer after reports indicate first choice goalkeeper for Argentina, Sergio Romero has pulled out injured.

The BBC reports that Romero is now ruled out of the World Cup after picking up an ankle injury. Romero has been Argentina’s number one goalkeeper for almost a decade, playing 94 times in his career with the La Albiceleste and his absence will be a major blow to head coach Jorge Sampaoli.

Caballero has deputized Romero in the last few years but has manned the post for Argentina only twice before now. His narrative could change drastically in the new few weeks if Sampaoli makes his interim number one for the tournament.

Barring any casualties or late changes, the 31-year old could increase his caps to nine games if he is selected as number one and Argentina complete the progression tree into the final.

Meanwhile, Argentina say Romero would have surgery on his right knee.
