OFFICIAL: Ruben Loftus-Cheek named in England’s World Cup squad

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has officially been named in England’s World Cup squad for this summer in Russia.

It caps off an exceptional breakthrough season for the Chelsea youth product, one that has been a long time coming.

He started brilliantly at Crystal Palace this season, earning his first senior cap in friendlies before Christmas, before an injury seemed to have scuppered his chances of making the squad.

But an excellent string of performances for Palace since his return has persuaded Gareth Southgate that he’s a worthwhile risk in a position of weakness for England.

With Gary Cahill not featuring, RLC will be the only Chelsea player going to Russia with the England team. It’s a disappointing return for an English club with such a strong youth setup, but given the domination of the youth categories by Chelsea youngsters, it’s probably only a temporary one.

Congratulations to Ruben – do us proud this summer!
