Why Chelsea’s monster move for Kalidou Koulibaly would be a huge mistake

As Maurizio Sarri’s glacial appointment as manager continues, bored journalists have turned to making up transfer rumours to fill the time.

They mainly involve Sarri’s former team Napoli, and connecting players that the manager might want to bring with him to the Premier League.

The most commonly linked, as in the Metro here, is centre back Kalidou Koulibaly. He’s a long term target of the club we’ve written about on many occasions here.

But this is a club with a limited budget each summer as we’ve seen. We can’t go out and buy in every position. Spending the €85m that the Metro claim, or even anything close to that, would wipe out our budget on a position we’re perhaps best stocked in. While we could do with a new right back, a new central midfielder, a new attacking player and a new striker; centre back looks pretty set at the moment.

Koulibaly may be the man Sarri wants, but once he gets to know this team, he will see there are much bigger problems.
