Chelsea make decision on next manager after ‘marathon meeting’ on Thursday

Reports from the Italian media suggest Chelsea are getting ever closer to appointing Maurizio Sarri after a long meeting on Thursday.

Sarri has long been linked with a switch to the Blues this summer after Chelsea’s miserable campaign under Antonio Conte.

According to SportItalia via Football Italia, the Italian’s entourage had a ‘marathon meeting’ with Chelsea’s chiefs to discuss replacing Conte in the Stamford Bridge dugout and they seemed impressed with the former Napoli coach.

They are said to be readying a two-year contract for the 59-year old and will task him with rebooting the club’s status as one of Europe’s elite.

Although Sarri was fired by Napoli when they hired former Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint Germain tactician Carlo Ancelotti as head coach, Chelsea still have to pay Sarri’s €8m release clause in order to offer him any deal.

The Express reported that Napoli would welcome David Luiz as part exchange for Sarri but it is a deal Chelsea are likely to reject.
