Chelsea look closer than ever to first summer signing, no matter who their manager is

Chelsea are on the hunt for a new midfielder – they must be.

Cesc Fabregas is getting old and had some truly awful games this campaign, Tiemoue Bakayoko was absolutely shocking, and while he probably deserves another season to improve, we can’t be relying on him as first choice next term.

There have been various targets linked with us for a move this summer, but Jean-Michael Seri looks to be the prime option, especially if Manchester City tie up the Jorginho deal as expected.

France’s Le10Sport say that Chelsea are on the verge of a deal with the Ivorian, a move that would make a very nice start to the summer – although Arsenal are a big rival for his signature.

With a central midfielder in place, they can start moving on to look at other positions of need.

Of course any signings will depend on who becomes the new manager. But whoever it is, they are likely to see the deficiency we have in that position, and agree that there aren’t many better options out there than Seri, especially at that price.

Of course there’s always a chance that the new manager will want to integrate some of our own talented midfielders from the academy like Ruben Loftus-Cheek or Mason Mount.

But let’s be realistic, we’re far more likely to spend tens of millions on a foreign import.
