“They should keep the coach and look to move four to five players on” – Chelsea favourite backs summer clearout at Stamford Bridge

It’s an attitude that many Chelsea fans have taken up over the last few months, and they’ll be relived to find out that they’re not the only ones who think it.

Antonio Conte will leave this summer, but most of us agree that that won’t solve much. The squad will still be unbalanced, and full of excess players not up to the requisite standard.

Marcel Desailly, not only a Chelsea here but also a well respected player across the continent at the top level, agrees.

‘Before they’ve changed the coach, and kept the players. This time they should keep the coach and look to move four to five players on,” he is quoted as saying in the Metro.

Of course, that depends on the players who go. There are no shortage of candidates, but last year they sold first teamers and got worse.

What they need to do now is sell the excess flab of the squad and use those funds to purchase top level players who can actually improve the first team.

Having Danny Drinkwater and Ross Barkley both competing for a spot in the team when neither is good enough is a waste of time. That £50m could have been used to buy a player good enough for Conte.
