Antonio Conte is leaving Chelsea, when you boil it down, because he wasn’t backed in the transfer market enough. He feels that he hasn’t been given the budget to compete for the Champions League, and if he can’t compete for that top prize, he wants out.
The bad news for Chelsea fans is that, according to today’s Evening Standard, his replacement will not only suffer from the same issues, they may even be given less money to play with.
While the club are hardly going to cut off the flow of money to the first team entirely, they are going to continue to limit their net spend each summer. That means selling solid players to provide funds for upgrades elsewhere – hardly a recipe for drastically improving a squad.
Whoever the new manager is must be aware of this. We cannot afford another situation like the one we have at the moment with Conte, who clearly feels he was misled about the levels of investment the playing staff would recieve.
