How Chelsea could have ended up with Roma hero as John Terry replacement under Jose Mourinho

Chelsea fans had to watch former Blue Mohamed Salah eliminate Manchester City last night, but in the other thrilling game on at the same time they could have had an equally painful experience as Roma, the team that caused them so much damage in the group stage, went through with their 3-0 win over Barcelona.

The winning goal was scored by Kostas Manolas, the Greek defender who was heavily linked to the Blues last summer. Chelsea ended up buying Antonio Rudiger instead, which made the departure of Manolas impossible.

But a couple of years before that, there was a much earlier bid from the Blues under Jose Mourinho.

Back in 2015 sites like the Daily Express cited Italian tranfer hub TuttoMercatoWeb as saying that the towering defender had been identified as a potential John Terry replacement after their three bids for John Stones were rebuffed.

The notorious signing of Papy Djilobodji had been made, so perhaps it was no surprise that just a month later the club were still in the market for a defender.
