Antonio Conte gives big hint on whether Chelsea will start Giroud and Morata against Southampton in FA Cup

Chelsea fans saw both Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud starting a game for the first time since the latter arrived at the club in January.

The two strikers have been swapping roles in the starting 11 under Antonio Conte, and are at times both on the bench with the Italian manager preferring to go with Eden Hazard in the number 9 role.

However, against Burnley in Thursday night’s clash at Turf Moor, Chelsea began the game with both strikers and looked absolutely in control of the game from the blast of the first whistle. Despite the telepathic understanding between the two strikers, Chelsea failed to score many goals in the game, with Morata guilty of missing a golden chance, he could have even passed to Giroud, who had made himself available on the other end of the opposition box to tap in.

Conte was fond of what he saw in the clash and was insistent on beginning their next game against Southampton with a two-pronged attack.

“This could be an option for Sunday or the future. This was the first time we try it and we had good responses. It could be an option.

“When you have players to show you the desire to sacrifice without the ball it is great. We surprised them with two strikers and they showed that.To see Giroud and Morata, to play in this way and see good combination and link with them and press with and without the ball, this is the right way to have satisfaction in the future.”
