International break strikes again as Chelsea starter sent home with injury

Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen has been sent home from international duty with Denmark.

The 21 year old has forced his way into Antonio Conte’s first XI ahead of David Luiz and has had an exceptional breakout year.

He didn’t feature in Denmark’s squad yesterday as they played Panama, and manager Age Hareide, quoted in the Metro, clarified why he had been absent.

“Andreas Christensen has been sent home to London, we do not want to take any risks with him.”

It sounds very much precautionary, and there’s another whole week until the massive Tottenham game that is looming on the horizon, but this kind of sweaty wait is the last thing Chelsea fans wanted.

Luiz is the obvious candidate to return to the team to replace Christensen should he not recover in time to face Tottenham next weekend, but his fitness is in question too, as he tries to recover from a persistent knee injury that has prevented him making a first team appearance since January.
