Chelsea’s attempts to sign Manchester United outcast don’t stand up to scrutiny

Chelsea have today been heavily linked with moves for Luke Shaw, the Manchester United left back. But the elements being forced together to generate a transfer story just don’t really add up.

There are undoubtedly  some parts that do. For one thing, Shaw is almost certainly going to leave Manchester United this summer. Jose Mourinho has consistently criticised him to an almost disturbing degree, with accusations of bullying now being thrown around without much irony.

Secondly, it’s true that Shaw is a Chelsea fan, and was keen to join the Blues from Southampton before the baulked at his asking price.

But there are many more elements that don’t add up. Most importantly, Chelsea have one of the league’s best left backs already in Marcos Alonso. Not only that, they’ve just signed a fresh backup to him in the form of Emerson Palmieri from Roma.

The chances of them adding a third left back to that collection, especially one who is likely to demand decent wages, is very slim.
