Chelsea return to Premier League with striker dilemma top of the agenda

A lot of talk ahead of the midweek game between Chelsea and Barcelona was over who Antonio Conte would pick up front. In the end, he went with a strikerless system that worked exceptionally well against Barcelona’s dominant passing.

But Manchester United this weekend will present a different challenge, and the choice between the two forwards that Conte dodged on Tuesday will return to trouble him again on Sunday.

Morata is the big money signing, who started the season well and even decided the reverse fixture with a great header. He’s looked disheartened with having to sit on the bench these last few games, and dropping him for this big game could break his confidence entirely.

On the other hand, Giroud has slotted in nicely to the team, looks confident and has now got his fitness back after playing twice last week.

We perhaps got a clue from the fact that Conte brought on Morata ahead of Giroud against Barcelona, but it wouldn’t surprise anyone to see the Frenchman supplanting his Spanish counterpart as number one this weekend.
