Chelsea January signing ‘in contention’ to start against Man United

Chelsea could have Olivier Giroud starting their game against Manchester United on Sunday, after manager Antonio Conte revealed the Frenchman has settled quickly into life at Stamford Bridge.

Giroud was signed by Chelsea in last month’s transfer window following the Blues’ desire to add to their attacking ranks. Michy Batshuayi was shipped off to Borussia Dortmund, to pave way for Pierre Emerick Aubameyang to head to Arsenal. That meant the path had been cleared for Chelsea to land their man Giroud, who has started one game already at the club.

That start culminated in his first goal in a Blues shirt, as Chelsea beat Hull City in the FA Cup last weekend.

He did not feature in Chelsea’s clash with Barcelona in the Champions League last Tuesday, as Conte decided to go with Eden Hazard in the false nine role, and subsequently introduced Alvaro Morata in the second half to lead the attack.

But Conte says Giroud would have a part to play against Man United on Sunday.
