Chelsea defender determined to set new record

Cesar Azpilicueta has revealed how he felt about being rested by Antonio Conte, and as always the Spaniard has not shown even a hint of ego, insisting that he only wants what’s best for the team.

Azpi was rested against Newcastle last weekend, breaking a streak of 74 consecutively Premier League games stretching back to before the arrival of Antonio Conte at the club.

Last season the Blues had no European football in midweek, so the defender was able to play week in week out without issue.

As one of Conte’s favourites, he’s already racked up serious minutes this season, but the midweek round of Premier League games sandwiched by Champions League weeks proved to be enough to persuade the Italian to rest his lieutenant.

Quoted on ESPN, the defender said he was determined to get back into the groove of playing ceaselessly, and that he hoped to break his 74 game streak.

He can start a new run this weekend against West Ham.
