Chelsea’s opposition should fear breakthrough defender taking the handbrake off

Andreas Christensen looks like a seasoned Premier League player already. Despite having made just a handful of starts in the division, he looks like he’s been around for years.

He was exceptional on loan in the Bundesliga for two years at Borussia Monchengladbach. That’s exactly why he was given the opportunity that few others loanees are given at Chelsea. He was given a genuine chance to break into the first team.

What should excite Chelsea fans is the way that Christensen can be expected to improve over the coming months if he remains in the first team. While he hardly plays like someone who’s flustered now, more practice in the division will potentially allow him to take more risks in possession.

That’s perhaps the one area he’s behind his competitor David Luiz is in. And only because Christensen taken off the handbrake… yet. Luiz is happy to play risky long balls when the team play direct. It will be interesting to see what Christensen when he feels confident enough to do that.
