Chelsea’s January transfer window needs are clear

Chelsea’s needs for January are obvious when you look back at the final days of the summer transfer window.

While a deal for Danny Drinkwater got over the line in the end, last minute moves for Ross Barkley and Fernando Llorente failed.

The need for Barkley has been seriously diminished because of the return of Eden Hazard from injury and the switch to a formation that used only one of our attacking midfielders behind Alvaro Morata.

But the need for another striker remains prominent. Llorente is off the market after his move to Spurs, but with Michy Batshuayi not convincing Conte in the starts he’s had, a move for another veteran stopgap is definitely on the cards this winter.

Beyond that, a backup for Marcos Alonso is also top priority, although there’s a question there over whether it would be better to hold on for the summer when another attempt for Alex Sandro could be on the cards.
