Chelsea planning £88m January swoop for Argentine international

Chelsea are plotting a way to save their title defence this season, and could splash the cash big time in order to do that.

According to a report from El Gol Digital, the Blues are planning to trigger Inter Milan star Mauro Icardi’s staggering €100m (£88m) release clause this January.

Italian Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is determined to bolster his squad as soon as possible, and is likely to dig back into the selection of Serie A, where Icardi has performed quite brilliantbly.

The Argentine striker has bagged 11 goals in the Italian top-flight this season, including a stunning hat-trick against A.C. Milan.

Icardi was strongly linked with a move away from Internazionale last summer when the Italian side failed to qualify for an European competition in 2016/17, but the skipper refused to leave.

Chelsea could go all-out for him once the January transfer window opens. The move would make a lot of sense even in the middle of the season for the Blues, as Icardi would be able to play for the side in the Champions League. Alvaro Morata is the first-choice striker in the team at the moment, but with Conte keen to play the 3-5-2 formation with two complete forwards upfront, Icardi could be a superb player to partner the Spaniard in the Blues offense.
