Antonio Conte will pick David Luiz and prove that the Brazilian is out in the cold

It seems an odd thing to say that a player being picked by his manager will show just how far that player has fallen in the boss’ estimations, but that could be the case tomorrow night.

David Luiz will likely start in the heart of Chelsea’s defence against Qarabag, his first appearance in Blue since their last Champions League game – the appalling performance against Roma which they lost 3-0.

Since that game, Luiz’ performance and his subsequent behaviour have lead to him being dropped for the two Premier League games against Man U and West Brom. Andreas Christensen stepped in and seized the chance given to him.

Now Luiz looks set to play with a rotated side against Qarabag, as Christensen is rested for the weekend’s crunch game against Liverpool.

Luiz will be happy to be back on the pitch tomorrow, but it’s an ominous sign for him that he will be lining up alongside Danny Drinkwater, Antonio Rudiger, Pedro and the rest of the second string.

Let’s hope he takes it the right way.
