Andreas Christensen to battle Antonio Rudiger to fill another gap in Chelsea’s back line

David Luiz’s moment of madness at the end of today’s game has created serious problems for Chelsea as they look forward to a run of games without the Brazilian which will conclude with Manchester City at the end of this month.

It will also create opportunity however, and one of Antonio Rudiger or Andreas Christensen will be the beneficiary.

Gary Cahill’s three game suspension opened the door for Antonio Rudiger in the games leading up to this one, and many thought the German would continue to start.

This makes him the favourite to return to the side, but it could easily be argued that Andreas Christensen is the better choice to step in for Luiz.

The Dane played has been Antonio Conte’s first choice in the centre of the back three when Luiz has been rested previously, and his superior ability on the ball means there’s a strong case for him too.

Conte’s natural caution means that Rudiger will likely get the nod, but an impressive showing from Christensen in the upcoming cup game against Forest may tip the balance in his favour.
