Reason why Fabregas and Willian didn’t play much last season

Cesc Fabregas has revealed why he and teammate Willian did not play a lot last season.

The two players enjoyed limited time on the pitch Last season with others like N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic seeing more action.

The dynamic pair were trusted by Antonio Conte so much they made a combined 70 appearances in the Premier League.

Only 13 Chelsea players played more than 10 games last season under Conte has maintained faith in a constant starting 11 as the campaign wore on.

Fabregas reveals it was because there were few competitions to play in.

Last season because of the schedule with no Champions League — and we went out early in the League Cup — we were all fit for most of the season. We basically had every week off.

The manager didn’t have to make a lot of changes. I paid for it, Michy paid for it, Willian paid for it. So we had to keep working and wait for our chance.

Chelsea now have Fabregas, Nemanja Matic, Tiemoue Bakayoko and N’Golo Kante as central midfielders going into next season although Matic is not with the squad training in Asia as he looks for a move out of the club, knowing he may not start the key games after Bakayoko’s arrival.

With more competitions this season as the Blues prepare for Champions League football plus the Premier League and other domestic cups, there will be plenty of minutes available for Conte’s charges to enjoy.

Fabregas has been working out just fine after he tweeted a picture of duel with Pedro, showing his well-built muscles.

The most experienced man in Chelsea’s midfield looks ready for the challenge ahead.
