Official: Gary Cahill is Chelsea captain

Chelsea have announced that Gary Cahill take over officially as club captain from the departed John Terry.

Cezar Azpilicueta has been named his assistant.

Cahill was signed by Chelsea in 2012 and has gone on to amass 163 appearances for the Blues putting in some great performances, scoring 13 goals in the process.

His partnership with former captain Terry, was lauded as one of the best in the English game in their title winning season in 2015.

Speaking for the first time as captain, Cahill told the club’s official website he is ready for the daunting task.

Thank you, yes, it’s definitely a proud moment in my career. I’ve had some good moments up until now and this certainly ranks very highly. To be captain of such a huge club like Chelsea is a great personal achievement.

It’s fantastic when you see the boss has faith in you and trusts you in terms of your character and personality. Ability is one thing, and you could never play for Chelsea without having ability, but the personality and character of a player is vitally important. For him to show that faith in me means a lot. I will fight for the manager and fight for all the players as long as I’m at this club.

Cahill has spent almost five years at Chelsea but has been the longest serving player in the current squad although David’s Luiz was signed a year before him. Luiz was sold to PSG eventually, where he spent two seasons before returning to Chelsea last summer.

The 31-year old lead the Blues out for most part of last season’s title winning season and has earned the right to lead his colleagues substantively for the remaining seasons on his contract.
