Why Chelsea’s signing of Tiemoue Bakayoko would spell the end for Nemanja Matic

Chelsea have been heavily linked with signing Monaco’s Tiemoue Bakayoko in recent weeks, and this could lead to the departure of a current first team regular.

Signing Bakayoko would mean N’Golo Kante, Cesc Fabregas, Matic and Bakayoko would all be competing for two spots in the team, with Nat Chalobah’s prospects of playing time reduced to almost nil.

It would seem logical that one of Fabregas and Matic would leave to make way for the new arrival, and given how similar Matic is to the Frenchman, it’s only logical to conclude that he’s the one who might make way.

Cesc Fabregas probably hasn’t had as much playing time as he would want, but Conte showed towards the end of the season that he trusted him, and he’s the only player of those 4 to offer really genuinely creative threat in attack.

So while Conte likes Matic and had him as first choice for the majority of the season, he may now decide that he is also the easiest to upgrade, especially if they can recoup a good portion of Bakayoko’s fee through selling the Serb.
