Chelsea’s 2016/17 Premier League triumph – month by month

Chelsea’s dominant Premier League campaign has finally come its end, as the Blues eventually secured the title with a seven-point margin to Tottenham below as they collected as many as 93 points in total to triumph the title.

We’ve decided to take a look at how Chelsea made it through month by month, to be ultimately crowded as the Premier League champions – for the fifth time in the club’s history.

August, 2016

Antonio Conte’s first ever competitive game for Chelsea saw his side facing West Ham at home. The Blues cruised into a well-fought 2-1 win over Slaven Bilic’s Hammers, and continued the winning run with a 2-1 away win from Watford and a 3-0 hammering over Burnley to also be rewarded with the first clean-sheet of the season.

Chelsea were 100 % victorious in August and collected all nine points possible from the opening three games – a dream start for Antonio Conte at Chelsea!

Goalscorers this month: Eden Hazard (2), Diego Costa (2), Michy Batshuayi (1), Victor Moses (1), Willian (1)

League position: 2nd, below Manchester City on goal difference

Meanwhile in other competitions: Chelsea advanced in the EFL Cup with a 3-2 win over Bristol Rovers at Stamford Bridge. Also, Chelsea signed two big reinforcements in Marcos Alonso and David Luiz on the deadline day of the summer transfer window.

September, 2016

Things progressed very smoothly for Chelsea in August, but after the first international break of the season, it seemed like it all had changed.

A disappointing 2-2 draw away from Swansea was already a knock to the heels for all Blues supporters, and resuming this sort of performance against Liverpool and Arsenal in the upcoming games was something to be scared of.

This was exactly what happened as Chelsea recorded their first defeats of the campaign at home against Liverpool (1-2) and away at Arsenal (3-0). Many thus started questioning Chelsea’s capability of challenging for the title, and started believing the aim should be addressed to finishing in top four.

Diego Costa’s brace wasn’t enough to give Chelsea three points from Swansea.

Goalscorers this month: Diego Costa (3)

League position: 8th, eight points behind league leaders Man City

Meanwhile in other competitions: Chelsea progressed to the next round of the EFL Cup in a 4-2 extra-time win over Leicester City.

October, 2016

Following Chelsea’s back-to-back defeats to Liverpool and Arsenal, Antonio Conte knew it was time for change. The Italian boss implemented a whole new system of 3-4-3 to his Chelsea side, and the Blues were starting to become unbeatable.

Chelsea had a stellar month in October which began with a 2-0 away win from Hull City thanks to goals from Diego Costa and Willian. Chelsea then returned to Stamford Bridge hammering reign champions Leicester City 3-0 and ex-manager Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United 4-0 with some style, rejuvenating Chelsea fans’ belief into what could be a huge campaign for the Blues. On the last day of the month, Chelsea also returned from the St. Mary’s Stadium with full three points and a clean-sheet.

Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and Antonio Conte were both voted as the Player of the Month and Manager of the Month for October respectively.

Meanwhile in other competitions: Chelsea suffered a 2-1 defeat to West Ham in the EFL Cup after Conte implemented a heavily rotated squad against the Hammers.

November, 2016

November was the month our good form turned us into title favourites, as the winning streak resumed with three wins from three games yet again.

Everton were first struck down with an overwhelming 5-0 victory at Stamford Bridge, with a more narrow win coming away from Middlesbrough thanks to the only goal of the game scored by Diego Costa. Chelsea then overcame Tottenham 2-1 in a very tight clash at the Bridge, extending their winning run in the league to seven games with an astonishing 19 goals scored, and just one conceded.

Conte also collected his second monthly accolade in a row, while Diego C0sta’s impressive form earned him the Player of the Month award. Pedro’s curler against Spurs was also named as the Goal of the Month.

December, 2016

Chelsea defeated Spurs but had even bigger task ahead as they faced Manchester City away next. Pep Guardiola’s side were yet to lose a single game at home, but Chelsea had other plans, as goals from Diego Costa, Eden Hazard and Willian rocked the Citizens in front of their own fans, extending their lead at the top of the pack to four points.

The December schedule was tough, but Chelsea kept going and going. Three successive 1-0 wins over West Brom, Sunderland and Crystal Palace prior to a 3-0 triumph over Bournemouth and 4-2 victory against Stoke City saw the Blues reach a record-breaking winning run of 13 league games.

With 13 goals scored, three conceded and a 100 per cent winning rate achieved from the last month of 2016, Conte was once again named as the Manager of the Month, becoming the first ever manager to win the award three times in a row inside one season.

Chelsea defeated Manchester City 3-1 at the Etihad.

Goalscorers this month: Diego Costa (4), Willian (3), Eden Hazard (2), Cesc Fabregas (1), Pedro (1), Gary Cahill (1)

League position: 1st, six points clear from second-placed Liverpool

Meanwhile in other competitions: Chelsea had been drawn against Peterborough United in the FA Cup.

January, 2017

The 2017 didn’t start as well as 2016 came to its close, as Chelsea’s 13-game winning run finally came to its end as Spurs knocked us down 2-0 at White Hart Lane.

Chelsea then faced some serious issues inside the club, as a bust-up between Antonio Conte and Diego Costa saw the Spaniard being left out of the matchday squad to face Leicester City away. In the light of the loss to Tottenham and Diego Costa falling out with the manager Antonio Conte had a lot of pressure on his back ahead of the game, which he however handled perfectly leading the Blues to an impressive 3-0 win over the reign champions – just like in the reverse fixture.

Diego Costa returned to the side a week later and was the first goalscorer in Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Hull City, as Chelsea seemed to be back on track. Another difficult fixture saw us drawing 1-1 against Liverpool away, but the Blues remained strong ahead of a revenge for Arsenal.

David Luiz’s first goal of the season opened the scoring at Anfield.

Goalscorers this month: Marcos Alonso (2), Pedro (1), Diego Costa (1), Gary Cahill (1), David Luiz (1)

League position: 1st, now nine whole points clear from second-placed Tottenham and Arsenal

Meanwhile in other competitions: Chelsea triumphed Peterborough 4-1 at the Bridge and Brentford 4-0 two weeks after, progressing to the fifth round of the FA Cup. On the January transfer market Chelsea didn’t use money to sign new players, but recalled Nathan Ake from his loan spell at Bournemouth, selling Oscar and John Obi Mikel to China and Branislav Ivanovic to Russia.

February, 2017

Chelsea’s avenge on the Gunners was as successful as it could get, as through Eden Hazard’s Goal of the Season nominee and Cesc Fabregas’ lovely chip versus his former side saw the Blues hammer the hopeless North London rivals 3-1. The Blues’ run was slowed down by a 1-1 draw at Burnley, but Antonio Conte’s men were able to bounce back to a 3-1 win over Swansea City at the Bridge.

Winning two of three from February, Chelsea retained their position at the top of the table and seemed like never coming down!

Eden Hazard scored an astonishing solo goal against Arsenal.

Goalscorers this month: Cesc Fabregas (2), Pedro (2), Eden Hazard (1), Diego Costa (1), Marcos Alonso (1)

League position: 1st, already ten points clear from Tottenham on the second position

Meanwhile in other competitions: Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Wolverhampton in the FA Cup was also a decisive boost for the Swansea game following the Blues’ poor 1-1 draw at Burnley. Following the win, Chelsea were drawn to face Manchester United at home.

March, 2017

Another revenge was complete, this time over the Hammers, when Chelsea were 2-1 victorious in their visit to West Ham. A few weeks later Gary Cahill’s late winner saw Chelsea claim full three points from their difficult away game at Stoke.

Due to the international break Chelsea only played two Premier League games in March, but handled the pair of games very well winning both.

Gary Cahill’s goal at Stoke won Chelsea important three points.

Goalscorers this month: Diego Costa (1), Eden Hazard (1), Gary Cahill (1), Willian (1)

League position: 1st, still ten points clear.

Meanwhile in other competitions: Meanwhile, Chelsea were once again victorious when facing their former manager Jose Mourinho and his United side, as N’Golo Kante struck the Blues to the FA Cup semi-finals, keeping Chelsea fans’ dream of a double alive.

April, 2017

The second-last month of the campaign kicked off with a surprise result as in-from Crystal Palace rocked Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge, raising Tottenham’s hopes of catching the Blues before the West London side could mathematically clinch the title to themselves.

Despite the slight shock, Chelsea bounced back defeating Manchester City 2-1 thanks to a lovely Eden Hazard brace, and went on to hammer Bournemouth 3-1 away. Another point-dropping result emerged at Old Trafford, though, as Mourinho finally got one over Conte. Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham had received yet another boost in their title charge, but Chelsea’s 4-2 win over the North London side in the semi-finals of the FA Cup separated the men from mice.

Later that month Chelsea impressively overcame Southampton and Everton – who Pedro scored another Goal of the Year nominee against – and Chelsea would only need two wins from their last four games to clinch the title following Spurs’ slip-up at West Ham.

Chelsea took a huge step towards the title following their 3-0 victory over Everton.

Goalscorers this month: Eden Hazard (4), Diego Costa (2), Cesc Fabregas (1), Gary Cahill (2), Marcos Alonso (1), Willian (1), Pedro (1)

League position: 1st, four points clear of Tottenham

Meanwhile in other competitions: As mentioned above, Chelsea cruised into a delightful 4-2 victory over Tottenham in the semis of the FA Cup thanks to a brace from Willian, and goals from Eden Hazard and Nemanja Matic (and what a goal that was!). Arsenal defeated Manchester City on the other side of the semis and will thus face Chelsea in the final.

May, 2017

The final month began with Chelsea just two league wins away from the title. The first one came right ahead when the Blues’ dominant performance and a 3-0 win over Middlesbrough sent the Premier League new boys straight back to the Championship. Goals from Diego Costa, Marcos Alonso and Nemanja Matic saw Chelsea just one win away from a party.

Four days after the win, things weren’t as easy away at the Hawthornes. Chelsea had to wait until the 82th minute of the match to break the deadlock, as outcast named Michy Batshuayi came on from the bench to seal the deal for the Blues and clinch Antonio Conte’s side their second league title in just three years! The party could finally begin!

With the league title already secured, Conte named a heavily rotated side against Watford, but managed to lead the Blues to a 4-3 victory at the Bridge, and hammer Sunderland 5-1 in the last game of the season (which was also the last game for club legend John Terry). Chelsea lifted the trophy for the fifth time in the club’s great history, and could do the same with the FA Cup next Saturday.

Chelsea clinched the Premier League title in their 1-0 win over West Brom.

Goalscorers this month: Michy Batshuayi (4), Diego Costa (1), Marcos Alonso (1), Namanja Matic (1), Cesc Fabregas (1), Cesar Azpilicueta (1), John Terry (1), Willian (1), Eden Hazard (1), Pedro (1)

League position: 1st – CHAMPIONS!

Meanwhile in other competitions: Chelsea will face Arsenal next Saturday in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium.
