Chelsea have a worrying new rival for £52m striker target

Chelsea’s need for a top striker this summer has been well known for some time now, but one of their main targets may be slipping from their grasp.

Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata has had a frustrating season in the Spanish capital, coming off the bench to great success but being unable to supplant Karim Benzema in the starting lineup.

This has lead plenty to believe that the Spaniard will look to move away from Real, with Chelsea one of the teams hotly tipped to be chasing him over the last few months.

But now the Italian press, the Gazzetta dello Sport in particular, is putting forward the claim that AC Milan want the striker, and have launched a massive bid thanks to the funds made available by their new Chinese owners. They claim that the Italian club will offer €60m and €6.5m a year to Morata to blow Chelsea’s bid out of the water.

Morata should still prefer the move to Chelsea if he feels he’s likely to be a certain starter for Antonio Conte, but this interest is likely to drive his price up, and could turn the transfer into a summer-long saga.
