Antonio Conte explains John Terry’s guard of honour

Chelsea fans didn’t only witness a thunderous 5-1 victory over Sunderland today, as they also shared an emotional moment with John Terry – one of the club’s greatest players ever – on the 26th minute of the match.

The former England skipper was brought off for the last time ever in his two-decade long Chelsea career, which is now coming to its very end.

The Blues players all surrounded Terry to give him his well-deserved guard of honour as Gary Cahill stepped in to replace the 36-year-old and be rewarded the captain’s armband meanwhile.

Despite the heavy amount of confusion, blame for time wasting and hate towards the act, Chelsea boss Antonio Conte stated that he’s very glad for JT and thinks this was the best way to give him the farewell he deserves.

“[There was ] a lot of emotion, it was very positive for us. We overcame a difficult step but now we must celebrate with our fans.

For sure now we have another chance to celebrate this season with the FA Cup final. But it’ll be very tough.

I told you that for sure it was very important to find the right solution to celebrate a great champion and legend for this club.

He deserved to start this game. For the substitution, he deserved this celebration because he’s in Chelsea’s history.

I wish for him and his family the best. It’ll be a great loss because he did a lot this season on and off the pitch.

Now we must be respectful for his decision. He is one of the best defenders in the world. He deserved this [guard of honour].”
