Modest Chelsea star refuses to accept he’s favourite for player of the year

N’Golo Kante is a hard man to pin down on the pitch, and he’s almost as slippery off it. The shy Frenchman is quiet and modest in interviews, and even when he’s pinned down by his home nation’s press as he has been on international duty this week, he spends most of his time trying to deflect compliments onto his teammates.

Since singing for Chelsea £32m last summer the midfielder has been a vital cog in Antonio Conte’s regeneration of the team, leading by example from the middle of the pitch with big performance after big performance. But despite this, he’s always trying to pass the credit onto his teammates.

In an interview with Canal + quoted in the Metro, Kante has named Eden Hazard, Diego Costa and David Luiz as other potential player of the year winners from his side.

While nobody would complain with any of those three winning the award, the fact that Kante is doing it for a second year on the trot may well him him the prize in the end.
