Former Chelsea coach explains why Romelu Lukaku move would be a mistake

Ray Wilkins, former Chelsea coach and Stamford Bridge favourite, has given his opinion on the mooted transfer of Romelu Lukaku.

The midfielder, quoted in The Metro, explained to Sky Sports that he didn’t think Lukaku would be able to break into the Chelsea team ahead of Diego Costa, meaning that any lavish transfer fund the Blues would need to spend on him would be a waste of money.

Wilkins reckons that the man sold for £28m just 3 summers ago would now cost twice that, and given Antonio Conte’s tactical preferences, such an outlay would be a mistake.

Lukaku has been strongly linked with a move in recent days thanks to ongoing contract negotiations with Everton that seem to have hit a brick wall. The forward’s agent Mino Raiola had previously said he was certain his charge would put pen to paper on a new deal, but this week the Belgian himself told reporters that he did not think he would be extending his stay at Goodison Park.
