Chelsea linked with exceptional banned set piece wizard

Chelsea have been linked with Turkish midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu in today’s gossip columns.

Although currently serving a ban for contract issues earlier in his career, the attacking midfielder has been exceptional for Bayer Leverkusen in the past few seasons and has been consistently watched by Europe’s top sides.

Chelsea are now finding themselves linked most strongly with him, and it’s not hard to see why Antonio Conte might be interested.

Calhanoglu has exceptional technical ability passing and shooting on both feet, and is perhaps Europe’s most feared set piece taker after Toni Kroos.

The links in the Daily Star come from Turkish site Ajansspor, and both cite a £33.2m release clause in the player’s current contract that would allow Chelsea to swoop for a not unreasonable sum.

The one lingering question is whether he might feel some loyalty to his current side after they lost him to his current ban through no fault of their own. Time will tell, but loyalty in football is hardly on the rise.
