Why Chelsea should spend big on new winger

Pedro is in the best form of his Chelsea tenure so far and Willian has done a job both off the bench and when he has started. So one may be asking why that position is something that needs to be talked about?

After opting to not spend in the winter window and offloading Oscar, Ivanovic, Mikel, and others Chelsea have a war chest of cash that could be spent on upgrading the team. The right wing position has become the spot that has not quite been filled in recent years.

Pedro has been playing well but is he really the best Chelsea can do? Spending big money on a right winger makes sense for a number of reasons.

The first reason is because for several years now players like Alexis, Bale, Griezmann, Ferreira Carrasco, and Reus have been available but teams have not put in the higher bids to get them. These same players have flourished in their club sides as well as their national teams and have proven themselves a class above the rest.

A big reason spending to get a right winger makes sense is because it will benefit the rest of the attackers. As seen this year, both Hazard and Costa have been targeted by double and triple coverage at several points due to their fine form throughout the season. No disrespect to Willian and Pedro, but you just do not see that with them.

For example, signing a player like Alexis would mean teams cannot bring extra players to mark Hazard or Costa because then Alexis is left open. If they try to put two on Alexis, now Hazard is left one on one.

On this same thought, we have seen Hazard and/or Costa have poor games this year as well as Pedro or Willian, but adding another lethal weapon to the attacking three gives us a stronger chance of getting that goal that turns an 0-0 to a 1-0 win.

Another reason it makes sense is because of the finances. Since the summer of 2013, Chelsea have spent over one-hundred million on wingers including names like Salah, Schurrle, Willian, and Pedro. Instead of continuing this calculated risks, spending less than that total and getting a world class winger makes financial sense too.

It is something to note as well that China has shown interest in Willian and as good as he has been for us, a large offer is something to consider. If we were able to get say seventy million for him, the money could be used to get a replacement who is from that world class category.

The final reason it makes sense to spend on a big name winger is because next year we will be back in the Champions League. We need more depth and the front three has proved to be a position that could use some help.

Let us know what you think and who you would like to see in the Chelsea blue next year.
