Poor crossing costs Chelsea in Burnley draw

Chelsea earned a draw at Burnley this afternoon, but it could have been a win had they crossed the ball better.

Burnley’s defence played incredibly narrow, with a midfield dropping deep to blanket it, and as Eden Hazard found space between those lines they only got more compact. This left swathes of green open for Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses to attack down the flanks.

Both players got forward but neither took advantage of the space to play precise enough balls into Diego Costa, who was always looking to get ahead of the Claret centre backs.

In fact the best delivery came from Cesar Azpilicueta late on, an outside of the foot cross that caught out two defenders who had become accustomed to heading clear poorly targeted inswingers from Moses and Alonso.

Chelsea did not have a shot on target after Pedro’s 7th minute goal and Burnley played well, but one couldn’t help feel that with a little more composure in the wide areas the Blues might have made their periods of pressure count.
