Chelsea linked with suspiciously pricey move for Benfica defender

Chelsea have been linked with a move for Benfica full back Jose Semedo, according to reports in Portugal translated by Sport Witness.

The 23 year old full back can play on either side and makes sense as a move to cover and provide competition for our current wing backs.

Benfica president Luis Felipe Vieira has been in London this week, which explains the source of some of the rumours.

Semedo would apparently cost €40m (£34.4), which seems incredibly steep for a player who hasn’t really shown himself to be top quality yet, despite promising reports from Portugal. It’s hard to see us buying an unproven player for that much given the kind of world class talent available for not a huge amount more.

Perhaps we would be better off letting the reported interest from China materialise. If it doesn’t appear, we would be able to get a much better price for Semedo.
