Chelsea accused of aerial weakness without captain’s awesome presence

Ray Parlour, speaking on talkSport and quoted by the Daily Star, has suggested that Chelsea are weak in the air.

It smacks of hindsight a little after Chelsea lose a game to two headers, but the former Arsenal player insists that it’s a problem he’s noticed before:

“I’ve seen quite a number of games where aerially they’re second best without John Terry winning the ball.” he commented.

“It’s not just against Tottenham, I’ve seen it in a few games now.”

Certainly the loss of Branislav Ivanovic and John Terry from the side has meant some inevitable loss of aerial ability. But David Luiz and Gary Cahill are both excellent in the air and Marcos Alonso’s height at left back gives him an advantage in that area too. Nemanja Matic and Diego Costa can hold their own, but beyond that it’s true that there’s not much height or heading ability in the rest of the team.

Perhaps Ray has a point after all.
