Middlesbrough trying to milk £35m from Chelsea for defender

Chelsea’s rumoured interest in Ben Gibson made some sense as the Blues plan John Terry’s long term replacement. The young Englishman has shown a lot of promise at Boro this season, and looked like he might be a smart pickup both in terms of squad composition, home-grown players and good value.

However that last benefit has now been blown out of the water by word from the Daily Mirror that Boro are going to try and extract £35m from us for the defender. While the defender has shown great promise, there’s no way you’ll see us paying that much for him unless he goes full Beckenbauer from now until the end of the season.

Given that this price tag is likely a ploy by Middlesbrough to warn us off their lynchpin defender, it seems only fair to say “job well done” to the club from the North East as we turn our attention to cheaper, and very possibly better, targets.
