John Terry to turn down coaching role at England’s national team

Chelsea’s veteran defender John Terry has today been linked with ending his player career and moving on to a coaching role in Gareth Southgate’s England set-up. However, it seems that the 36-year-old is keen to resume playing.

Terry’s current Chelsea deal is coming to an end at the end of the season, and even though he’s unlikely going to be offered a contract extension as things stand, an ESPN source close to the player has reported that coaching roles aren’t welcome just yet.

Terry has been the backbone of the Blues’ defence in the previous years, but Antonio Conte’s side have barely noticed the absence of the team skipper after going eight Premier League wins in a row by conceding just two goals in that time.

Southgate’s plan for the new coaching staff with the Three Lions also includes ex-Chelsea men Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard, and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.

It’s likely that Terry will be taking his experience to a new level one day, but won’t be looking for a coaching role for the coming 18 months at least, according to reports.
