Chelsea in advanced talks to make young defender summer’s first signing

Chelsea are closing in on their first signing of the summer as the club are reportedly in advanced talks with Argentine center-back Emanuel Mammana, the TransferMarketWeb exclusively reports.

The first new Chelsea player under incoming Antonio Conte was widely expected to be some Serie A superstar, but the interest has also been to Argentina, where the Blues are close to snap up a deal for River Plate defender Mammana.

John Terry’s new contract at the club only sees him as a fourth choice center-back, which leads to Conte hiring some new, younger center halves to strengthen the defence.

Mammana has been one of Argentina’s promising players as the 20-year-old has been serving River Plate throughout his career, and is now targeted by the current Azzurri coach.

Chelsea also signed Matt Miazga, 20, from New York Red Bulls this January, and he’s been working hard to prove his worth for the West London outfit making two Premier League starts so far.

It remains quite unclear which direction Chelsea are heading this summer, as several players haven’t cemented their place in the team and could be looking for a way out, while it’s difficult for the club to attract any high-profile names without Champions League football.
