Guus Hiddink appointed interim Chelsea manager

Chelsea have confirmed that Guus Hiddink has been appointed as Jose Mourinho’s successor until the end of the current season.

Mourinho was sacked earlier this week after a torrid start to Chelsea’s title defence which has seen them lose nine of their sixteen Premier League matches.

The Blues sit sixteenth in the League, just one point above the relegation zone.

Hiddink took interim charge of Chelsea on one previous occasion following the sacking of Luiz Felipe Scolari in 2009.

The Dutchman won the FA Cup with the Blues and also reached the Champions League semifinals.

Hiddink, 69, will be in the stands as Chelsea host Sunderland on Saturday afternoon with his first game likely to be the boxing day clash with Watford at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea will look to appoint a new permanent manager in the summer, with Pep Guardiola and Diego Simeone reportedly on the shortlist to take charge at Stamford Bridge.
