Was Jose correct to bench Costa?

Costa is a world class player who wants to play every game. There has never been a doubt to any fan that he gives it his all week in and week out and the fact that he threw all his toys out of the cart in public made me love him more.

Costa is going through a rough patch and is eager to get back to his scoring ways and he needs game time to do it. But there is no time an individual’s needs must outweigh the team’s needs.

Matches between Chelsea and Tottenham are usually volatile a few years back we all saw Torres permanently scaring a Tottenham player in a violent confrontation, this weekend was no different we saw Cesar getting hacked down violently in what seemed to be a straight red card.

Now imagine having Costa on the pitch after such an incident.

Physically Diego is fine. He is working well every day and his mood is positive. He was ready to play when we he went to warm up. I have a good relationship with him. For me his behaviour is normal. A top player on the bench will not be happy.

Tottenham know the correct buttons to push to make Costa self-destruct I don’t think it’s a good idea to field him in any away derby with a history of getting out of control.

I am sure Costa will start the next game and the media is trying to create something out of nothing.

Chelsea seem to be getting the results now and its clear all the players and manager are working hard and willing to get out there to get the job done. That’s all I saw when Costa threw his bib at Mourinho. Benching Costa is hard for any manager but the best managers will do it.
