Jose: I would have turned down Manchester United

Jose Mourinho has claimed he would have turned down Manchester United to join Chelsea had he been offered the role after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

Mourinho took charge of Chelsea in 2004 leading them to the title twice in a short three year stint. His relationship with owner Roman Abramovich broke down, leading to termination of his contract in 2007.

After a successful journey in Italy and Spain with Inter Milan and Real Madrid respectively, the Portuguese chose to return to Chelsea who had chopped and changed several managers in search of consistent glory.

Jose reveals that had Alex Ferguson offered him the job instead of the much mailigned David Moyes, he would have still turned the Scotdown in favor of a role at Stamford Bridge.

Every manager in the world looks at Man United as a huge club but I wanted to come to Chelsea. We didn’t bring that to the table because we were so open and he knows so much about myself that he knew that for almost a season, I want to leave Real Madrid and I want to come to Chelsea.

Ferguson is a huge admirer of Jose after his first stint was nothing but magical. That trophy laden spell followed Jose impressive results as manager of FC Porto, the unfancied side that beat Manchester United in the Champions League in 2004.

The most decorated Manchester United manager after his retirement stated clearly Jose was not considered for the job since he made it clear he was moving to Chelsea.

We did the best under the circumstances we were in,” Ferguson said of Moyes’ appointment. When I announced my retirement, do you honestly believe that one man could decide the future of Manchester United?”

That’s absolute nonsense. There was a good process… Jose was going back to Chelsea, Carlo Ancelotti was going to Real Madrid, Jurgen Klopp had signed a contract with (Borussia) Dortmund, Louis van Gaal was staying with Holland for the World Cup.
