Chelsea 1-3 Southampton: 5 things we learnt

It must be hard to be a Chelsea fan at this moment. The team that won two trophies just a few months back has become utterly ordinary and sad thing is Jose doesn’t know how to fix it. Against Southampton, Jose tried all he could, who said he didn’t do that prior to this game?

The Portuguese coach had attempted tactical and mental strategies to help his sinking Blues put one of their darkest periods behind them but everything he does bounces back off the wall into his face.

Chelsea were thought a lesson by the Saints on Saturday and I will try to put emotions aside as I bring you five things we learnt against Southampton. This week we are looking at stakeholders who have lost it or not.

Willian has still got it

Not many times will we see this phrase in this article, obviously because of the mess the club finds itself in. Willian scored the first goal and raised hopes inside Stamford Bridge that this could be the turning point in a long bad period. However his neat goal couldn’t help the fortunes of his side.

Willian is a free kick master! Bold to say when you consider the experts we have seen in the game but the Brazilian is surely taking the right steps. He has scored four out of four this season! Some of them are a bit fortunate to go in, whereas some are masterfully hit with great technique as we saw against Southampton.

Looking back at Chelsea’s great free kick takers, we will have on a relatively short list, Gianfranco Zola, Frank Lampard, Alex and Didier Drogba. Willian arrived at Stamford with a reputation of gliding past defenders but now has a knack of getting past goalkeepers too with shots from outside the 18-yard box.

Jose Mourinho has lost it

Bizarre but true. The former Real Madrid manager has never been a situation like this, ever in his career. He sees his London based side in lowly places on the league table with eight points in eight games as they lie 16th.

Against Southampton, his tactical plan was flawed and his contingencies failed as he brought Matic on and substituted him after 28 minutes in the second half.

Most importantly, his rants after the game gave all the impressions of a man who has done everything to save his job and now readies himself for the sack.

Perhaps the only thing he hasn’t done it drop Ivanovic; which takes us to the next point…

Ivanovic lost it long ago

Despite Branislav Ivanovic’s role in the team as vice captain, he has been Chelsea’s poorest player on the pitch and dare I say, the biggest problem at the club. Another strange change at the club, considering he was the best right back in the premier league just a few months back.

He’s looked way off the Serb we have become used to watching at the Bridge. He’s being beaten to the ball by every winger in the top flight and bamboozled by even ordinary forwards.

His mistakes are very obvious as the lenses have zoomed in on him in recent games and as Tadic dribbled past him shortly after halftime, it was a clear sign of the Ivanovic who has fallen from grace to grass.

Fans clearly don’t want him at the club any longer, yes you heard right. For more information, See next lesson…

The Stamford Bridge crowed have finally lost it

Every football fan will tell you that the connection Jose has with the Chelsea fans is an amazing one; one that is just magical to say the least.

However, in recents weeks the Blues manager has come under so much criticism that even he sees the thin line between himself and the Blue fans fast becoming a thick dark line. During the game, Jose decided to take off Chelsea’s goalscorer, Willian which was welcomed with boos at the Bridge.

There was another incident where Matic, who was introduced at halftime was taken off after 28 minutes to allow two strikers play together in Loic Remy and Radamel Falcao. The decision was not accepted by the fans in the stadium and they booed that all the way.

The final whistle was the last opportunity for the fans to show their anger at the team’s recent displays and results as they booed their own manager and players as they marched down the tunnel.

Who said Falcao could have found his mojo at Chelsea? He’s still lost it!

It is fair to say the striker didn’t lose it at Chelsea. He was in Red and white when he showed the world he’s not the player we were accustomed to in Spain through France.

Jose spoke glowingly about the Colombian forward after his torrid time at Old Trafford and mentioned the striker might surprise a few people with good performances. I bet Jose is surprised himself now after Falcao endured yet another misery on the pitch.

I confess he won’t ever be the good old Falcao in a blue shirt and his loan deal will never see permanent ink.

Space didn’t allow me to add captain John Terry’s demise as well but tell us what you think too about the happenings at the club after Saturday’s game.
