Can Chelsea really afford to sack Mourinho?

Chelsea are struggling in the Premier League with indifferent results after an entertaining display last season in route to winning the title. They were great to watch, forward thinking and efficient with few chances testing games against sides that we’re happy to sit back.

However, Jose Mouirnho’s side has looked a shadow of themselves this season with lethargic displays coupled with clear body languages of fatigue. It is true that the problems at the club go beyond the two mentioned above but whatever they are the solution can’t be parting ways with Mourinho.

Why?

It will take a whooping £37.5 million todo away with Jose if Chelsea want to continue their usual tradition of chopping and changing managers.

He recently signed a four-year deal after winning the Premier League and Capital One Cup with the Blues in his second season of a second stint.

The Portuguese coach’s contract, which is due to run for another three years after this season, is worth more than £10m per year, according to the Daily Star and he clearly blurted out his frustrations after the clash with Southampton saying, “I can also know what you are thinking, what you are saying in the studio, what people are imagining what is going to happen, what is not going to happen. I want to let it be clear – one, I don’t run away.”

So after Jose reveals never to walk out on the club, A world record fee would have to be paid to sanction the move should it be decided he is not the right man to lead Chelsea out of their fully blown crisis.

The free paying Roman Abramovich has paid out big sums before to get sack managers, £12.6m to do away with Brazilian flop Luiz Felipe Scolari, Andre Villas-Boas was awarded £12m – although he waived some of it when he landed the Tottenham job – and Carlo Ancelotti £6m as he had a year left on his contract.

With these numbers in mind, the club’s hierarchy decided not to get rid of Mourinho after the defeat to Southampton last Saturday despite the Portuguese’ rants after the game.

He clearly called the bluff of the club insisting they will be sacking the best manager in their history. True? Well, I believe so! He’s won three titles with the club, three more league cups and one FA cup in his two stints with the club.

The club has plans of expanding Stamford Bridge which currently holds 42,000, into a 60,000-seater arena as part of an ambitious £500million project.

In a state of darkness, dishing out £37.5 million to Jose Mourinho as compensation is not the way to go and Chelsea’s officials have seen the right switch to turn on the light.
