West Brom 2-3 Chelsea – 5 things we learnt

A tough win at the Hawthorns was not exactly what Jose Mourinho wanted but three points would mean he’s not complaining. The first win of the new season should act as the springboard for mounting the title defence.

Let us look at the five things we learnt from the win against West Bromwich Albion.

1. Pedro looks cut out for Premier League.

Any doubts on the adaptability of the Spanish winger have been dispelled within few minutes. His pace and direct running will be a handful to many sides in English football. Mourinho looks to have landed a winner for the Blues.

2. Branislav Ivanovic is struggling

The Serbian defender is central to the plans of Mourinho and was even elevated recently to vice-captaincy. But, on the evidence of the three games so far, Ivanovic is troubled by pace on the wing. Don’t be surprised if he is replaced as right-back.

3. John Terry has a fight on his hands

After being hauled off by Mourinho at half-time last game, Terry got sent off against the Baggies. With the pursuit of John Stones being talked every day, it looks like Terry will have to fight for his future at the Stamford Bridge.

4. Costa will revel in Pedro’s company

The common theme in the first couple of games is the frustrated figure of Costa. The Spanish striker looked lonely upfront and looked the only player capable of scoring goals. With Pedro slotting seamlessly, Costa can become an even bigger threat.

5. Falcao doesn’t look any near to his best

Falcao arrived at Stamford Bridge hoping to recapture his old form under Mourinho. The way he is fluffing easy opportunities, it looks a long way back to the top for the Colombia striker. Moruinho will have a bigger task getting goals from him.
