Koeman: Defender keen on joining Southampton

Ronald Koeman, the current Southampton manager, has stated that Atletico defender, Toby Alderweireld, “was very happy about Southampton.”

With interest from both Chelsea and Tottenham being reported it is believed that the London clubs are both more desirable for the Belgian defensive rock, but Koeman believes that after having secured European football that Alderweireld.

According to other news sources Chelsea and Tottenham made £14m and £11.5m offers for the Belgian international. Chelsea, after having failed to sign Varane, are still interested in signing a defender, and are currently looking into signing either Alderweireld or Antonio Rudiger.

At the moment though it seems that Jan Vertonghen, Alderweireld’s ex defensive partner at Ajax, has been an important factor in Alderweireld’s interest in the Spurs; making both Tottenham and Southampton favourites ahead of Chelsea in securing the Belgian’s signature.
