Spanish duo omitted from International Squad

Blues fans will be delighted to hear that talismanic striker Diego Costa and midfield playmaker Cesc Fabregas will not be part of Spain’s squad for their forthcoming fixtures against Belarus and Germany.

Costa was not even selected in the initial squad – Marca report Spain coach Vicente del Bosque saying that “Costa has some annoyances.” The striker is still affected by hamstring troubles, and Mourinho has suggested that international football exaggerates this proble, so naturally will be delighted by this news.

Fabregas was selected in the initial squad, before being withdrawn, after Mourinho said the midfielder played through a hamstring injury in the 2-1 win over Liverpool. The Chelsea manager admitted that this was a “gamble”, with circumstances where similar for Ramires, who is struggling with an abductor problem, meaning that “both played injured”. However it was an understandable gamble, given that his priority is obviously Chelsea, and the international break loomed large.

The Chelsea boss gave credit to his medical department as “fantastic”, and admitted that he may now be without the midfield duo for “a game or two.” Mourinho was insistent that Fabregas could not join the Spanish squad so will understandably be delighted by this, having told the press “no, he can’t go. Well he can if he wants, but he can’t.”

The Blues manager also unsurprisingly praised the attitude his players showed in defeating Liverpool, particularly that they “came out to win the game in the second half.” This as opposed to accepting one point at Anfield, in itself a “fantastic result”, with the 2-1 win leaving Mourinho “really, really pleased.”

Meanwhile La Roja will seek to take control of qualifying group C, after a defeat to leaders Slovakia left them of top spot, an unfamiliar position for them.
