Lewis Baker Promoted to First Team Squad & England Under 21’s

Both Lewis Baker and Patrick Bamford have been selected in Gareth Southgate’s England Under-21’s squad for the European Championship Play-Off matches against Croatia.

Lewis Baker has also been promoted to the Chelsea first team squad, joining both Nathan Ake and Andreas Christiansen in making the step up. He will wear the number 34 shirt.

Baker was on the bench for the First Team match against Bolton in the Capital One Cup, with Nathan Ake starting in midfield alongside John Obi Mikel, putting in a comfortable and assured performance.

Baker had also taken the England Under 20’s Captaincy and scored eight times in 13 appearances for the Under 19’s. His performances in securing the FA Youth Cup and Under 21’s Premier League title last season have certainly not gone unnoticed.

Baker, who has been at the club since the age of 10, has the opportunity to cement a place in the first team over the next few seasons. Although Chelsea have integrated youth team players before, the last one to make a lasting impression was Captain John Terry.

Baker is arguably one of Chelsea’s most exciting young talents, and fans will be hoping to see a lot more of him this coming season as he continues his impressive development, Nathan Ake also looks to be in favour and is likely to feature in future cup matches.

Mourinho seems keen to keep advancing certain players development, with Jeremie Boga, Patrick Bamford and Isiah Brown looking the most likely to also break through to the first team in the coming seasons.

Baker won last seasons young player of the year award and goal of the season awards, with an outstanding back heel effort against Arsenal.
