Official: Chelsea sign Filipe Luis

It’s official, Filipe Luis is now a Chelsea player. The 29-year old Brazilian left back from Atletico Madrid is a great signing for the Blues.

After seeing Courtois return from them, Diego Costa confirmed just days ago, and Tiago looking on the verge of a possible Chelsea reunion, he will feel right at home in West London.

What does Luis bring to Chelsea? After many good seasons in Madrid, he decided it was time for a change of scenery and new challenges. His switch to Chelsea means that we now have a left footed left back, something we had last year, but with a 33-year old Ashley Cole, his days were numbered.

Of course still a great player, Cole too needed a change of scenery. Luis brings a complete fullback to Chelsea.

Being able to get up and down the left flank supporting the left attacking midfielder/winger in the attack, while tackling, sliding, and defending his best in the back. His experience of playing a Champions League final last year was crucial for him and helps understand our goals for the new season.

With this signing, we spent £16 million. Somewhat of a bargain. Although he is days away from being 29, he still has a good 4 seasons left in the tank. At £4 million a season, you can’t go wrong.

In my whole opinion, it was the perfect buy. What it allows us, is 3-4 more good seasons with a proper left back. While some fans feel Luke Shaw was the answer, at £30 million we did not need to spend it on a left back alone. What this signing means for us is time.

What we are hoping is that in the next 3-4 years we are able to find a new younger replacement, whether that is through our academy or at another club. That being said, there is nothing wrong with Luis, he will help us win trophies these next few years and that is the big goal.

With aspirations for Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup, this is a crucial signing in challenging for all 4. This should be a great summer signing and help us win what we want next year. Hopefully this is not the last summer signing as we could still address a few more areas of the pitch to improve and get more depth.
